A while ago, I asked [info]tmelange if I could draw her a cover for her Smallville based story Pas de Deux. She graciously let me, so here is the finished version!


I decided not to stick with my usual (lazy) lineart based art and went with a cg-painting instead. The above image is the cover, one below is just the guys with no background. Click on the images for a larger version!

There are so many things I love about this but the eyes -- I love how Bruce's are a different color blue, the perfect color. And the way he's looking at Clark just--it slays me. He looks like he just...needs him. Like all he wants is for Clark to turn around. Bravo, Sami. You know that I think you rocked this like a rocky horse thing, but I really, really am impressed.

Like a rocky horse thing? Awesome! :D If I managed to convey even a little of the emotion of the fic, then Im beyond happy. I always liked the idea of Bruce's eyes as "wolfish" - I think jen_in_Japan always describes them that way, so a grayish blue seemed to fit not only the character, but the paler skin tone. TW's eyes were a different blue in every pic I saw lol, so I wanted to him to have a rich deep blue. Like I said before, it still makes me giddy that you liked it :D *hugs*

The likeness to the actors is so uncanny, the coloring is perfect (love how both their eye color is blue but it's a different type of blue).

it's just wow...beautiful...

Aw thanks so much ;) - I always like to make Bruce and Clark as subtley different as I can - it would just be odd if they both had the same blue eyes and black hair- even though the actors dont look anything alike. Thank you for commenting!

gorgeous . . . that's all i can say. you have both men down. i too love how both their eyes are blue but they're different shades. amazing work!

Aw thank you! Im glad the eyes are getting a lot of notice, I wanted them to stand out when you looked at them, but still make the boys different.

Aw thanks so much! I'm a firm believer that anyone can draw - it just takes practice to get better. Believe me, sometimes i just suck when i havent drawn in a long time

I use a pen and tablet, which is the most wonderful invention ever lol :D - If you have the money, I'd highly recommend getting one. As for the realism/technique, it just takes practice and reading a lot of tutorials to get it right, and there are soooo many amazing artists out there that I pale in comparison

I'm blown away! You've really outdone yourself here. *whistles appreciatively* The whole layout, with the shadows and the red...the way Bruce looks just like you'd imagine a young Christian Bale to look...the subtle shadowing on their faces and the skin tones...just fantastic!

Thank you, Jen :D The first idea I had was of was the shadows, and I knew I had to beg Theresa to let me draw this for her lol. I just get lazy and let the linart dictate the piece normally, but I decided to put a little more effort into this. Thanks for commenting!

This is absolutely unbelievable. They look exactly like the actors, and yet they both look like actual teenagers, too. Amazing! The shading is so realistic, Bruce's expression is one of such intense yet restrained longing, Clark looks hardened yet conflicted--ahhh, you captured so much subtlety in their faces!!! And the layout is gorgeous with the silhouettes of Superman and Batman behind them, and the red kryptonite ring hovering over everything.

Absolutely marvelous! I literally cannot stop staring. *stares*

Oh wow, thanks so much! But Ive seen your art, and I absolutely LOVE it. Your use of watercolors has me green with envy, lol! Its such a difficult medium for me, and I really respect people who use it. Ive gotten awfully spoiled by using photoshop and being able to "undo" mistakes that I always prefer people that can use traditional mediums. You guys are the real artists!

This is awesome. 100% awesome made from awesome concentrate.

The layout is just fantastic and the textured feeling of the background is a thing of beauty and a joy for everyone. And Bale's eyes and Welling's hair are especially stunning. But that layout...

Aw, thanks a lot Damo - the layout was the very first thing I thought of, even before deciding to do the cg-painter style, so Im really happy you like it! The textured background was like fifty different brushes in photoshop, lol, I even went overboard at one point where it was just a blur :D Thanks again for commenting *hugs*

Stunning work! I'm floored by how beautifully you've drawn both guys. Would you mind if I posted the bottom picture (with the close-up of Clark, unless you have a version with just Clark) in the [info]justtomwelling comm? I'd like to post the picture itself, along with a link back to your journal, unless you'd like it done some other way.
